The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill (CEE Bill), which was officially published in the Commons earlier this month, offers the UK Government a viable framework for climate action.

It is a private members bill introduced by Green MP Caroline Lucas and officially supported by Liberal Democrats as well as the Alliance, SDLP and Plaid Cymru parties plus many MPs from the SNP and Labour - 88 MPs to date.

Drafted by a group of scientists, academics, lawyers and environmentalists, the Bill aims to ensure that the UK plays a proper role in limiting global heating to 1.5 degrees Celcius.

The Bill outlines a proposal for a temporary emergency Citizens' Assembly who could help the government in determining which policies should be included in the emergency strategy.

Sir Ed Davey MP

Sir Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats

Ed Davey, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, told the Environment Journal: "Covid-19 has shown how quickly the world can change and the terrible price that not taking actions quickly and seriously can have. The failure to cut emissions means we are now facing a climate emergency."

"The Conservatives need to back this Bill to show real global leadership ahead of the critical COP26 talks this time next year."

So far, no Conservative MPs have signed it, so now is the time to ask your MP, Mark Harper to get involved. You can email him at mark.harper.mp@parliament.uk.

You can also sign a petition to Prime Minister Boris Johnson asking him to support it here.
