Protect our Post Offices
By Cllr Vilnis Vesma
Our campaigning against bank closures (top picture, Newent, 2018) was fruitless and I think we have to accept that closure of bank branches is an unstoppable trend; we cannot hope to campaign successfully ever on that issue. Like it or not, when market traders or your window cleaner accept cashless payments and you can spend a contactless 65p on a newspaper, when you can get cash from an ATM or with a transaction at the hardware shop, you realise that the age of the bank branch is past. Businesses like the cashless world too: less risk of theft, and no costs for depositing payments in their accounts.
But of course there will always be some people who prefer or need to use cash or cheques and for them - as well as for other obvious everyday reasons - the local Post Office is their last recourse. Which is why we have pledged to do all we can, working with our Labour, Green and Independent fellow Councillors, to defend Post Offices against closure.
