    Representing the Forest of Dean Liberal Democrats Dr Anthony Lynch and myself attended the funeral of Ian King at the "Our Lady of Lourdes" Catholic Church in Newent on Friday February 8th. Ian was an enthusiastic member of the constituency party and was its chairman until a few months prior to his death. The requiem mass was attended by several hundred people with the church being full to bursting point.

    A report in The Times on Saturday announced that Councils have spent about £100 million on fighting parents seeking support for their disabled children and losing nine out of ten of the cases that went to tribunals.

    I have two comments to make on this news.

    The stress and work this process puts plaintiffs through is enormous and the cost horrendous. When The Times states that local authorities have allegedly lied they do not exaggerate. Parents of disabled children go through enough agony already without having to fight for their rights and make a home for their families often in circumstances that would be a nightmare for most people.
